Hello, Computer Scientists! I’ve just heard about three (count ’em three!) CS-related events available to students in the Minnesota area. No experience necessary! I am going to start a calendar of such things, so if you have some ideas, please contact me!
The first one is “CodeDay Minneapolis” on November 12-13 (noon to noon). For high school and college students, it’s an opportunity to make a really cool project in exactly 24 hours while meeting cool people and making some new friends. https://codeday.org/minneapolis
The second is the South Dakota State University program design competition. Please notice that it doesn’t say “programming competition”, it is a design competition and there is no programming experience required. Teams will design and implement a software project over the course of 20 weeks. https://www.sdstate.edu/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/program-design-competition
The third is the annual Hour of Code! For the first time ever, we are hosting a Rochester-area Hour of Code at the CTECH Center. Events are available from elementary through adult. You need a free ticket to attend so that we have enough computers. Sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rochester-hour-of-code-tickets-27942165770
The bonus opportunity (not really an event) is the annual NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The National Center for Women & IT promotes women in all aspects of computing and technology, so if you fit the bill, apply now! https://www.aspirations.org/participate/high-school
